Saturday morning our ship arrived at the beautiful Puerto Chiapas. While primarily an industrial shipping facility, there is a beautiful terminal for pleasure. We debarked (fancy word for “got off the boat”) a little after 8am after eating a hearty shipboard breakfast. We were met outside the terminal by organized, English-speaking, officials who arranged for a van ride to the city of Tapachula. Once we were at the city square we could hire a taxi for the day on our own. The official recorded the drivers license number, cab number, and license plate of each vehicle. At EACH place we went an official did the same. It is important that we return to the ship on-time, and they know it!
First, and foremost, we asked to be taken to the Izapa Archaeological Site, about 45 miles from Tapachula Puerto Chiapas. For a DETAILED description, and photos, see the blog post on this page. However, in addition to the “architecture” at Izapa, we had the opportunity to meet and enjoy the PEOPLE of Chiapas. Because we were with a private guide, we got to see parts of the Izapa Site that are in peoples back yards!
After leaving the Izapa Archaeological Site(s) we were driven about 20 miles to Tuxtla Chico, better known as The Chocolate City. We arrived just after the big celebration for St. Mary, The Virgin of Candelaria. All the streets around the square were filled with food, vendors, and amusement rides. We watched them making chocolate, and purchased about 4 pounds of local goodies.
From Tuxtla our driver took us thru Tapachula, where we were looking for, Carlos, a childhood friend of Lynn’s. Unfortunately we were unable to connect on this visit. Our cab ride ended at the old town square where we wandered, looked in the City Hall, and enjoyed this big City.
Finally, we wrapped up a LONG, and interesting day. Got back to the port terminal building, had a couple affordable (and local) beers, enjoyed the music and dancers, (See Video), and waved good-bye to Tapachula Puerto Chiapas!
