Since we are also Architects – we are always interested in construction projects! This one really caught our attention for the cultural connection it will offer us with our friends in Mexico!
Soon our Mexican friends will be able to cruise from their home country to ports in Mexico and elsewhere without first coming to the United States. The new cruise port now being built in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco, Sonora) is 50% complete, and is expected to be completed by January 2017. Construction of the $100 million dollar project began in 2013. It will stretch about a mile in length west of the city’s tourist strip.
Rocky Point is a sleepy desert beach town at the top of the Gulf of California, chosen for this project because of its proximity to the United States. As it is about 200 miles southwest of Phoenix, Arizonza it is considered by some as “Arizona’s beach.” Since it is only a 3-1/2 hour drive from major cities in Arizona, many Arizonans already own beach-front property there.
“Our main market is and will always be Arizona, but the home port will bring people from other states to come and start their trip on the Sea of Cortez,” said Miguel Guevara, Puerto Penasco’s drector of promotion and international affairs. The Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) will provide new destinations for cruisers who have cruised the same familiar ports many times before. Also, many cruisers take land vacations in the cities they visit on a cruise so this will add future business for Mexico’s economy.
This project will open a new market for cruising since many of Mexico’s residents have not been able to cruise for lack of a visa. Once the port is open they will be able to take a cruise to their own ports such as Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, and anywhere else cruise ships go!
It is expected to attract international travelers, and will serve as both a departure and arrival point for passengers, starting with smaller vessels but eventually hosting 3,000-passenger cruise ships.
The completed port is expected to generate as many as 7,500 direct and indirect jobs within the first two years of operation. The Sonora tourism department’s director of port operations believes this new port will benefit the Mexican economy nationwide.
